# Bashaier vs Carrefour Egypt (mafegy): benchmark

**Headline:** Carrefour opens with campaigns; Bashaier opens with the shelf. On a 1440x900 desktop and a 390x844 phone, a Bashaier visitor sees products, filters, search, the branch, the delivery fee and the delivery time, and can add to the cart with one tap, before scrolling. On Carrefour's home page the first product row sits about 1.6 screens down on desktop and below the fold on a phone.

## How this was studied

- Pages: `https://www.carrefouregypt.com/mafegy/en` and `/mafegy/ar`, plus the deals page `/mafegy/en/online-deals/c/deals`.
- Date: 2026-10-21. Logged out, no cookies accepted, default location (the site pre-selected "Maadi - Cairo").
- Method: a plain HTTP fetch is blocked at the CDN (an empty page is returned), so the pages were rendered in headless Chrome (HTTP/2 disabled, desktop user agent) at 1440 px and 390 px, and the rendered DOM and screenshots were read.
- Not studied: Carrefour's checkout, sign-in and payment steps, delivery fee and minimum order (none of these appear on the home page). Everything below about Carrefour is what was observed on those renders. Everything about Bashaier is what this mockup does.

## What Carrefour does (observed)

1. A delivery-mode switch ("Scheduled" and "NOW") sits above the header, then the area picker, a "Search 50,000+ items" box, login and register, and the cart.
2. A category bar mixes grocery with non-food: Food Cupboard, Fresh Food, Fruits & Vegetables, Beverages, Electronics & Appliances, Mobiles & Electronics, Baby Care.
3. A hero carousel with 11 slides (one is a "Carrefour Products" brand banner about 280 px tall).
4. "Daily Offers": a row of large creative tiles (Deals Zone, a bank-card cashback, "High Discounts 30%", Coupon Zone). They carry no product, price or end time.
5. "Top Categories": two rows of about 9 image tiles each, grocery next to TVs, large and small appliances, cookware and mobiles. On the phone the first tile is the brand logo.
6. The first product row ("Exclusive Online Deals") appears after all of the above.
7. Product card: name cut to one or two lines, price, pack size, and a "+" button over the image. Some cards show a delivery slot ("Tod. 4:00 PM"), "Only 2 left" or a date range. The grocery cards showed no stock-by-branch information.
8. The rendered home page held about 1 MB of HTML, 245 images and 65 add-to-cart buttons, with six or more carousels.
9. A cookie banner with two buttons covers the bottom of the screen: about 90 px on desktop and about a quarter of the viewport on a phone.
10. The Arabic page is mirrored, but parts stay in English ("Maadi - Cairo", "items", "Search", "Cookies" inside Arabic text).
11. Delivery promises appear only as slot labels on cards and as generic FAQ text ("same-day express delivery and scheduled slots"). No delivery fee, minimum order or delivery time was shown on the home page.

## Where it is slow or cluttered

| Issue | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Products are far from the first screen | Banner, offer tiles and two category rows come first. First product row at about y=1470 px on desktop; at about y=950 px on a 844 px phone, with two cards visible. |
| Campaign art instead of prices | "Daily Offers" tiles show no price, product or deadline. The shopper must click to learn what the offer is. |
| One catalogue for everything | Electronics, appliances and beauty sit next to rice and milk, so category scanning is noisy for a grocery run. |
| Heavy page | About 245 images and 65 add buttons on one home page. |
| Cookie banner on top of the content | Hides a quarter of a phone screen on first load. |
| Phone layout | A horizontal scrollbar was present in the 390 px render. |
| Language mixing in Arabic | English fragments in the header and cookie banner. |
| Delivery cost and time are not visible up front | Only slot chips on some cards. |

## How Bashaier beats it

| Goal | Carrefour (observed) | Bashaier (this mockup) |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer taps to cart | Scroll about 1.6 screens, then tap "+" | Products in the first screen: 1 tap to add, no scroll. From search: type 2 letters, tap "Add" on the suggestion itself (no results page needed). |
| Faster scan | Mixed catalogue, carousels, large creative tiles | Grocery only. 9 category chips with live counts, a left filter column on desktop, a filter sheet on phone, active-filter chips that clear in one tap, 5 sort options. No hero, no carousel. |
| Clearer offers | Campaign tiles without a price or deadline | Every offer card shows the old price, the new price, the "Save N%" badge and its own live countdown. Two dismissible top bars carry a countdown, and dismissal is remembered (localStorage). Staff set the end date and time per product, and that drives every countdown. |
| Branch-aware stock | No branch or stock line on the grocery cards | Every card says "In stock at Faisal branch", "Only 3 left" or "Out of stock at Haram branch · in stock at Faisal, switch". Filters: "In stock at my branch" and "Available at branch" (multi-select). The cart warns about items unavailable at the chosen branch. |
| Guest cart | Not verified | The cart fills with no sign-in and is saved on the device. Credentials are asked for only at checkout, by an emailed code (no password). The phone is always captured. |
| One-screen checkout | Not verified | One page, no page loads: Cart, Address and phone, Email code, Cash on delivery, Tracking. Finished steps collapse into a one-line summary with "Edit". On desktop the order summary stays in view. 4 confirmations from cart to placed order. |
| Transparent delivery fee and time | Not shown on the home page | The strip under the header always shows the branch, the time range, the fee, the free-delivery threshold and "cash on delivery". The cart shows a progress bar to free delivery. The branch picker lists each branch with its own time and fee. (Fee, threshold and times are samples and flagged.) |
| Lightness | About 1 MB of HTML, 245 images | One static page. Images are lazy-loaded and fade in once decoded. Nothing blocks the content. |
| Arabic first | Partly mixed language | RTL layout, Arabic digits and copy first, with an English toggle that re-renders everything. |
| Order tracking | Not verified | A timeline (New, Preparing, Out for delivery, Delivered) with the branch, the ETA and the cash amount. It updates live when staff advance the order. |

## Honest limits of the mockup

- Prices, stock, fees, times and the free-delivery threshold are samples. Branch names come from public directories, and the third branch is marked "to confirm".
- The identity (wordmark and palette) is provisional until the real logo arrives.
- The email code, the courier name and the order flow are simulated in the browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
